a tour of "at the Threshold"

Robert Dye’s paintings combine elements of plein air landscape painting with abstract expressionism and painterly realism to create light-filled landscape imagery emphasizing the plastic qualities of oil paint. The sensual and evocative paintings are of human scale, richly textured and colored, incorporating divine geometric compositional arrangements. Themes emphasize both the symmetrical and nonsymmetrical reflective compositions associated with water-filled landscapes. Often horizon lines dissolve, intentionally blurring the distinction between landscapes and purely abstract imagery. Dye’s purposely ambiguous sense of scale in landscape imagery invites multiple interpretations, inviting the viewer to appreciate the work at many different levels.
Robert attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia where he studied extensively with Louis Sloan and Seymour Remenick in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has had numerous solo shows and has participated in group shows throughout the East Coast, predominately in the Philadelphia area.  Dye taught painting, drawing and art history for several years at art schools and art centers in the Philadelphia area including Fleisher Art Memorial and the Hussian School of Art. He now lives and paints in Dallas, Texas.

Artist's Statement

I started painting landscapes in and around Philadelphia PA, eventually discovering the pine barrens of South Central New Jersey. The area is full of streams and ponds leading my plein air paintings to take on the symmetry of reflected landscape forms.

Texas, with its big skies and wide-open landscapes has brought more space to my paintings.

My large paintings are based in specific landscapes - but texture, color, light, symmetry and scale blur the distinction between landscape and pure abstract imagery.

The figurative works are primarily studies of volumes and space.

Each painting represents a journey, exploring previously taken-for-granted forms. They are the artifacts of an adventure filled with challenges and unexpected surprises.
